Bluebird
Day 2007
On Saturday, April 7th, over 300 children and adults crowded into
the Gopher Campfire clubhouse to participate in the 25th annual
Bluebird Day where they learn about the habits of bluebirds. They
also get to build a bluebird house to take home. The club served
over 300 hot dog lunches to all participants partially through
the generosity of Hutchinson’s CashWise grocery.
Virgil
Voigt, the organizer of this annual event, along with Richard
Smith presented a slide show about the life cycle of bluebirds
to an overflow crowd in the clubhouse. They learned that bluebirds
are members of the thrush family of birds and are related to
the robin. At one time, bluebirds were a vanishing species until
organizations like Gopher Campfire and the Hutchinson Bird Club
took steps to provide them reusable nesting sites.
After
the presentation, the kids moved out to the screened in portion
of the club to build their bird houses. Fortunately, the club
had blocked the windows with plastic and added portable heaters
to take the chill off the 35 degree outside temperatures.
As the
pictures below will show, the kids had a great time pounding
nails into the pre-cut pieces of their bird houses. By 2:00 pm
there were only 50 houses left from the original 300 sets. It
was a real treat watching the joy-filled faces as they accomplished
this task.
A BIG
thank you goes to those volunteers who were involved in making
this annual event a BIG success. Some of those volunteers (and
we are sure to forget some) are Dale Kenning, Robin Dolezal,
Bruce Dolezal, Leon Goldsmith and Randy Flaig - who provided
the carpentry know-how; Rocky Lambert and Joleen Nowack and their
kitchen crew who served all those lunches; Richard Smith who
helped with the program; and the generous contributors – CashWise
Grocery, Stearnswood, Simonson Lumber, DockRite and Spruce Ridge
Resource Management.
